The Ayushman Bharat scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23, 2018. The main objective of this scheme is to provide health insurance benefits to the poor and deprived families of the country. Under the scheme, every family will be entitled to Rs 5 lakh of medical insurance.

 

Expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Scheme

 

Recently, the government of India has expanded the Ayushman Bharat Scheme to cover all senior citizens of the age of 70 years and above. This government initiative will provide senior citizens health insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per annum. This decision of the Government of India will benefit about 4.5 crore families.

Benefits for senior citizens aged 70 years and above

 

  • With this decision of the Government of India, all senior citizens who are 70 years of age and above will be eligible to avail the benefits of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.

 

  • Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, an additional insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh per annum will be provided to the senior citizens of the families who are already availing the health insurance cover. Other members of the family will be given a separate insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh. This top-up amount need not be shared with other family members. This means that the entire amount is available only for the health care of the senior citizen.

 

  • Senior citizens (70 years and above) already availing of any public health insurance scheme such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) and Ayushman Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) can also opt for Ayushman Bharat Yojana if they wish. But for such senior citizens, the condition is that they can get the benefit of only one of the two schemes, that is, they have to leave the first option only then they will be able to get the benefit of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.

 

  • Senior citizens aged 70 years and above who have already taken a private health policy scheme are also eligible for Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) if they wish.

 

  • Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is the world’s largest publicly funded health insurance scheme. About 12.50 crore families are being benefitted under Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Under this scheme, 55 crore people of 12.50 crore families are getting the benefit. Under this scheme, every family is given health insurance coverage of 5 lakh rupees every year.
