There are also the cellular jail where Veer Savarkar ji and other freedom fighters fought for the independence of the country.
How did it get its name, Port Blair?
The city was named in honor of Archibald Blair, a British naval officer of the East India Company. The Cellular Jail here, which is famous for the National Memorial, used to be a jail earlier. In which many freedom fighters and people from other countries were kept captive before independence.
Selection of the name of Sri Vijaya Puram
The choice of name Sri Vijaya Puram reflects its deep connection with Indian culture and history. “Vijaya” means victory, which refers to the victory achieved in the freedom struggle. The name honors the unique role of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which played an important role in the freedom struggle.
This is not the first time that the name of a city or district has been changed by the BJP government. Even before this, the BJP-led government in Uttar Pradesh has changed the names of many places and railway stations. Their names have been changed to their old and cultural names.
