Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on 13 September 2024 (Friday) that Port Blair has been renamed as “Sri Vijaya Puram”.The Central Government has taken this step intending to erase the colonial imprints. The government believes that this is an important tribute to the role of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India’s freedom struggle. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that “Shri Vijaya Puram” is a symbol of our struggle and victory in the freedom struggle.
